What is a DFW rate?
A DFW rate is the percentage of students enrolled in a college course who finish it with a D, an F, or a W (withdrawal). To calculate it, divide the number of students who earned one of those three outcomes by the number of students enrolled, then multiply by 100. If 48 of 200 enrolled students in an intro course end the term with a D, F, or W, that course has a DFW rate of 24 percent. Institutions track the number closely because all three outcomes tend to mean the same thing in practice: tuition spent on a course that produced no usable progress toward a degree.

How a DFW rate is calculated
DFW rate = (Ds + Fs + Ws) ÷ students enrolled × 100
A hypothetical section of general chemistry enrolls 240 students. At the end of the term, 20 earn a D, 31 earn an F, and 21 withdraw. That is 72 DFW outcomes out of 240 enrolled students, a DFW rate of 30 percent.
The arithmetic is easy. The definitions underneath it are where comparisons go wrong, and the W is the messy part. Institutions differ on:
- The enrollment snapshot. Most count students enrolled as of the census date, often the end of the add/drop period. A student who drops in week one usually never enters the denominator; a student who withdraws in week ten usually does.
- Which withdrawals count. Some campuses count every W on the transcript. Others exclude administrative withdrawals, medical withdrawals, or complete-term withdrawals where the student left the institution entirely.
- Incompletes and repeats. An incomplete may be excluded, counted as a temporary non-completion, or counted once it resolves to a final grade. Repeated attempts may each count separately or be collapsed into one.
Because of this, a DFW rate is most trustworthy when compared against itself: the same course, at the same institution, under the same counting rules, across terms. Any cross-institution comparison needs a footnote about who was in the denominator.

The honest answer to "what is a good DFW rate" is that it depends heavily on the kind of institution and the kind of course. Two cautions before using this table. First, these are broad ranges across whole institutions; an individual gateway course can sit far above its institution's average, and often does. Second, a low DFW rate is only good news if academic standards held. A course that lowered its DFW rate by making the exams easier moved the number without helping anyone. The useful benchmark for a specific course is its own history, plus similar courses at similar institutions, with learning outcomes held steady.

Why a D and a W count alongside an F
People new to the metric sometimes ask why a technically passing grade like a D gets grouped with an outright F. The answer is what each outcome does downstream:
- A D usually breaks the prerequisite chain. Many programs require a C or better to advance, so a D in college algebra or anatomy means retaking the course before anything built on it.
- A D can fail the major. Degree requirements often demand a minimum grade in core courses even when the college technically awards credit for a D.
- A W consumes money and time without producing credit. Tuition is typically already spent and the term is gone, but the requirement remains.

DFW outcomes do not fall evenly across student populations. A 2019 Gardner Institute study found DFW rates were 21% higher for Black students than the overall average. That timing is what gives the metric its weight. A student who fails a gateway course in the first year has usually not yet built the academic footing or campus relationships that help students absorb a setback later on. A failed or withdrawn gateway course is often the moment a student stops coming back. Provosts, retention offices, and institutional research staff track DFW because it is one of the earliest hard signals of whether a student will return, and because gateway sections are few enough that improving a handful of courses can reach thousands of students.
What actually lowers a DFW rate
Two levers matter here. One has large-scale evidence behind it; the other addresses the students that redesign alone does not reach.
Structural redesign of the course itself. The best-documented example is the corequisite model, which places students directly into college-level math with concurrent support instead of multi-semester remedial sequences. System-wide gateway math completion rose from 12% to 61% after corequisite-model adoption at scale (Complete College America, completecollege.org). In Texas, first-college-level math completion rose from 3.1% (fall 2017) to 13.3% (fall 2018) after corequisite policy adoption. Reaching the student while the grade is still recoverable. Redesign changes the course itself. A separate problem remains: what happens when an individual student starts slipping in week five.
